Internships very much depend on a student’s skills and area of interest. We have several areas in which a student can volunteer for a couple of weeks, a month or more. It can be in one specific area or can be across a couple of areas depending on the student’s availability.
MCF is a small charity with a wide scope and, as such, we need interns who are capable of working well under pressure and independently. We never really know what opportunities might be presented to us on any given day so we have to think and act quickly, communicate well with our team and be creative. We rely on our volunteers to be flexible, open minded and friendly, but mostly, they must be open to the learning experience that comes with working for MCF. It’s challenging but rewarding.
Media Internships – term time & holidays
Website Translation – Our entire website needs to be translated from English into Chinese. This includes all the pages currently on the website but also new pages/info/blog entries/ that are added over time. We also need someone who can lead this activity within the school and assign pages/articles/etc. to be translated to other volunteers and liaise with the Volunteer Coordinator.
Poster Design & Translation – Every year we have events that we need attractive, interesting, fun posters for, so we need someone who is artistic, creative and possibly good with computers to create these for us. It would be ongoing work with other posters and marketing material also needed, if the participants are willing. They will need to liaise with the MCF events team to gather information and run design ideas by as well as recruiting other members to assist. Further responsibilities could include printing and delivering posters to various locations in Beijing.
Photographer & Videographer – Photographers are needed to attend events, both educational and fundraising events, to take professional photos that can be used in marketing campaigns, promotional material and on our website. Furthermore, we are looking to make films about the work MCF does in Beijing, including short promotional films about MCF, its volunteers, its lesson and it’s events. As well as this, we would like to create a documentary style film about MCF and the migrant children we work with, that tells their story and helps others understand the work we do and why it’s needed.
Researchers – Our aim is to better understand the people we work with, so the research intern is tasked with gathering data on the migrant experience in China, but specifically Beijing. Facts, figures and stories that tell us why, how and where. Numbers regarding migrants, their children and their schools, homes and lives that we can use to help our supporters, volunteers and organisations that cooperate with us better understand the situation and why MCF does what it does.
Educational Internships – term time & holidays
Teaching (term time only) – MCF is always seeking groups of students who can go to a migrant school to teach. The subjects planned depend on the students’ skill sets and interests but this would be an activity that needs commitment to set dates from its participants. An intern will need to organise a group of volunteers to teach, choose a subject and come up with ideas of how to teach it, finally you need to design a lesson plan and provide resources for each lesson you teach, which MCF could offer support with and feedback on. Transport also needs to be arranged to and from schools as part of the volunteers’ duties. We also need someone who can lead this activity within the school and assign roles within the group to handle the work and liaise with the Education Coordinator.
Curriculum Design – MCF teaches at least ten sessions a week in a range of subjects and for this we need a broad base of lesson plans and resources. In this internship, you will help create lesson plans and resources for a variety of subjects, including English, basic science, art, music, etc. You will need to have original ideas, know the subject your planning for and be able to source the resources for the lessons whilst working collaboratively within a team, led by MCF’s Education Coordinator. You will also have the opportunity to observe or, if preferred, assist in lessons and provide feedback on content and teaching methods. Furthermore, you may be asked to accompany educational trips to migrant schools or go on field trips.
Activities – We need a group of students who can go to a migrant school(s) on a regular basis to do fun and creative activities with the migrant students. These can include arts & crafts, for example, painting, making things (knitting, upcycling, decorating something), games or outside activities (e.g. nature-based or environmental). This would be a regular activity for a set time that needs commitment from its participants. You will need to organise a group of volunteers to lead the activity, choose an activity and come up with ideas of how to do it, finally you need to write a plan and get resources for each activity you do, which MCF could offer support with and feedback on. Transport also needs to be arranged to and from schools as part of the volunteers’ duties. We also need someone who can lead this activity within the school and assign roles within the group to handle the work.
Fundraising & Events Internships
Fundraising & Events (mostly term time) – MCF runs various projects that need a continual supply of funds to help keep them going. These programs include our health check program, glasses galore and sponsoring a child to attend school. Therefore, MCF holds events throughout the year, from our biggest event, our annual Murder Mystery, to smaller events like Live With Less, our volunteer socials and the many fairs and bazaars we attend to raise our profile, sell merchandise and recruit volunteers. You will be asked to assist at events (both big and small), look out for opportunities for new events, come up with merchandise ideas, and run various errands in the build up to events. As part of this internship, we would ask you to come up with an idea for a fundraising event (it doesn’t have to be a large one) and organise it, recruit volunteers, market it and hold it to raise money for an MCF project of your choice. Our events team would support you, but you would be in charge.
